A place to call home

When it came to finding a new home for her and her son, Denise had been unsure about exploring shared ownership, having heard some mixed reviews. Since purchasing her shared ownership property however, Denise’s outlook has changed, and she’s even recommended the scheme to some of her friends.

We spoke to Denise about her experience…

What persuaded you to purchase a shared ownership home?

I wasn’t keen on renting as I didn’t want to pay money into something I wasn’t getting anything out of. I looked around at my options and came across some shared ownership properties. The scheme appealed to me because it was affordable, and it was the best way for me to get on to the property ladder.

How was the move into your home?

Even though I moved during the pandemic, it actually didn’t have much of an impact on the move. I didn’t have much to take with me as I was living with my parents at the time, and anything new I needed I had delivered to my new home.

Weald Living were brilliant throughout the purchase, and have been since we moved in too. Alice always kept me up to date during the process and was really helpful, so our experience was quite smooth.

Was there anything that stood out to you about the service in particular?

It was never an effort to contact the team. Even though Alice was unable to be there on my completion date, Paula came and gave me the key. Regardless of whoever it was I was in contact with, they were supportive and always on hand to answer my questions. I couldn’t have asked for a better service from anyone.

What was the feeling when you got the keys to your new home?

It was amazing! It was so nice and such a relief to feel like I had somewhere for me and my son. It’s great to have that independence, a place that feels like mine.

Have you done anything to help settle in?

I’ve got most of the stuff in that I want and it feels nice and homely. I’m currently saving to do a little decorating, just a little paint to change some of the colours. I also added some carpet to create a nice lounge area and separate it a bit from the open plan kitchen and dining space.

Do you have any advice for anyone looking to buy a home?

I would suggest saving as much money as you can for the deposit and the fees. The more you put in to start with, the better. I would definitely recommend shared ownership.
