Safety Matters: Lithium-ion Batteries

Date: 1 November 2024

What are Lithium-ion Batteries?

Lithium-ion batteries are lightweight, rechargeable power sources found in many everyday devices, such as mobile phones, laptops, e-cigarettes, e-bikes, and e-scooters. These batteries charge quickly, have a long lifespan, and pack a lot of energy for their size. However, they are sensitive to high temperatures, can be flammable if mishandled and cause large fires.

Here are some tips for using Lithium-ion batteries safely:

  • Always read the manufacturer’s safety instructions
  • Use the charger that came with your device and always charge devices on a flat, stable surface
  • Purchase genuine replacement batteries or chargers from reputable suppliers
  • Avoid charging batteries while you are asleep or out, and unplug devices once fully charged
  • Don’t charge or store lithium-ion batteries in areas that could block your escape route
  • Never cover chargers or charging devices
  • Do not use damaged batteries
  • Avoid overloading power sockets
  • Ensure there’s a working smoke alarm on every floor of your home

Proper disposal of batteries

Never dispose of batteries in your regular rubbish or with recyclable materials like cardboard, metal, or plastic. Follow your local authority's recycling guidelines and keep electrical items separate from general waste. If you're unsure, take unwanted electrical items or lithium-ion batteries to your local household waste recycling centre.
